Hi, my name is Nikki and I am a book-aholic. No – seriously – I am! I collect first editions, vintage books, design books, vintage children’s books, cookbooks… in fact anything with words printed on it. I can go out for groceries and come home with a pile of books but no bread or milk. Days off are spent idling away in dusty second hand book stores and packages drop into my mailbox daily, filled with books I’ve sourced on the internet.
I read them, collect them, arrange them and use them as props in photo shoots. I’ve filled bookshelves with books turned spine in to create a textural back drop, propped up ornaments with vintage tomes and piled them by colour to create height and depth in a space.
You can therefore imagine my delight when I visited the Maison et Objet design show in Paris this summer and saw books used in every conceivable way as design props.
A doorway created exclusively out of vintage paperbacks lead into an exhibition on words. Letters were scattered on the floor, below lists of words created out of wire.
One exhibitor created lamp bases out of antique books piled on top of each other with the lamp fixtures buried inside the books. Another turned pages from old botanical journals into beautiful framed works of art – one of which came home with me! Book pages were rolled, folded, cut and glued. Some were used as colour blocks on bookshelves while others were left open on display tables.
Needless to say, I came back with a head full of ideas and a suitcase full of books. Yes, I am a book-aholic, and proud of it!
